When I was younger, I remember fretting about coming up with resolutions for “the new year.” I would feel so much angst about pondering all of the things I should start doing and all of the ways I needed to improve myself. In fact, it would overwhelm me to the point that I stopped doing it entirely. Nowadays, with social media posts the pressure to set goals for the upcoming year can be intense.
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for taking time for self-reflection and growth. Optimizing various aspects of our lives can be healthy and positive. I read somewhere that only 9% of people complete their New Year’s resolutions. What I have found while coaching clients and in my own life is that there are a few “pre-steps” that help making those goals or intentions achievable.
1.) List all of the struggles you overcame this year that you are proud of yourself for navigating.
2.) Next, note 3 or more things, people or experiences that you are grateful for this past year.
3.) Lastly, take the next week to think about what you truly desire this upcoming year.
